Should I Choose a Public School or a Private School?

Posted on | Rachel Bishop

When it comes to choosing a school for your child, there are lots of options. One big question is public or private? Below you will find five reasons why parents choose private (or independent) schools for their children.

Small classes and individual attention

Independent schools usually have low student-teacher ratios that encourage close connections with students. The smaller classes allow the teachers to spend more time with each student to ensure that he is reaching his potential.

Education for the whole child

Independent schools nurture not just students’ intellectual ability and curiosity but also his or her personal and social growth. Opportunities extend well beyond the classroom to school leadership experiences, artistic pursuits, athletic competitions and outreach in the community.

Excellent teachers

Independent school instructors usually teach in their areas of expertise and are passionate about what they do. With more autonomy in the classroom, teachers are able to develop a full understanding of how each student learns and what interests and motivates each child. Most independent schools are not preoccupied with achievement test scores. Therefore, teachers can focus on helping students learn how to think rather than telling them what to think.

A community of parents who actively participate in their children’s education

Independent schools promote regular communication between parents and teachers to ensure everyone is working toward the same goal for the student. This open line of communication is an important part of how most private schools operate.

The opportunity to choose a school with a mission

Parents can select a school whose philosophy, values and teaching approach is right for their child. While academics are important to parents, they are not always the highest priority. Parents also want to know their child is safe at school and that he is in a positive learning environment.
